Everything Old Is New Again
Round and round we go. Despite the decision I made a couple of months ago, I've changed my mind (again) and decided to take the risk and leave Global Corp to return to AGA (Grace's Co.) It's hard to explain what was behind the change of heart without rambling .. I'll do my best to cover it in brief steps.
1. Back in March, I initially struggled, thought I was going to say 'yes', then decided on 'no' when Global matched the base salary offer from AGA. When I communicated my "no" to Grace, she advised her boss (A.D.D. boy). We decided to tell ADD that the reason was adverse press making me nervous. Mr. Big (and I mean BIG) wanted to call me to discuss, but ADD stepped in and made the call to me instead. After almost convincing me to change my mind AGAIN, I stuck to my "no" and AGA proceeded with looking for another candidate.
2. Throughout April and May, Grace kept me in the loop on the candidate search and how it was going (which is to say, not well at all). There were many applicants but very few qualified ones. Of those that were qualified, they had it whittled down to two potentials. Of the two potentials, both had decent first interviews, #1 had a good second interview, #2 did not. The problem with both candidates was their over-estimation in their worth to AGA. Oddly enough, if #1 had been willing to accept the terms #2 was demanding .. they probably would have extended an offer. Instead, #1 wanted roughly 40% more in compensation than the position was maxed at, as well as a title that wasn't warranted or on the table. #2 was demanding the maximum ranges available to AGA (compensation, title and contract terms). A reasonable offer for someone with the right experience and skills. Unfortunately, #2 didn't possess enough of either.
3. At the end of #2's second interview with Sr. Mgmt, the Exec turned to Grace and asked "What can we do to get TVJ to change her mind? Stock options? Signing bonus? What?" And so the next round of talks began. In the end, they offered everything I asked for the first time around, and I accepted.
To be honest, if it hadn't been for a few bad days at work, the fact that Bossman seems to be far too distracted and losing his focus .. and most of all .. that candidate #2 is a co-worker of mine whose arrogance I heard first hand with regard to the AGA position .. I might not have re-considered. When it comes right down to it, both potential candidates fucked themselves on the job. It was THEIR arrogance that re-opened the door for me.
Candidate #1 is set to lose his current position in the next few weeks due to layoffs. For someone who knew he was about to be unemployed, his lofty demands were .. uh .. impressive. Candidate #2 will continue to meander along with Global .. pulling in significantly less than he was attempting to negotiate. Too bad he didn't take a moment to realize that what they were willing to give him was not only fair compensation for the position, but generous for someone with his level of experience and skill.

Wow. Just wow. I hope this works out absolutely FANTASTIC for you!! You deserve it. :)
